Swizzle Studio has a weird little thing for the Queen of Canada. We’re not monarchists, but we do like the continuity of Elizabeth II’s 60 year reign. To coincide with the celebrations in Great Britain this weekend, we finally rehung a 1952 Coronation memento from the Toronto Star in Swizzle Studio’s Music Room.
This isn’t the first time we’ve gone a little Liz mad. In 2002, we turned Swizzle Gallery’s front window into a Golden Jubilee tribute. I painted a portrait of Queen Elizabeth, festooned it with bunting, and recontextualized the Sex Pistols lyrics “We mean it, man!” The window was partially a poke at our Portuguese neighbours during the World Cup, but it was a tribute all the same.
