My drummer pal Tony Lee celebrated his 50th birthday last week with a six hour gig featuring 20 bands he plays in or his friends do. It was a great night of music and a reminder of what a talented town Vancouver is.
Tony asked me to illustrate the show poster. It was a real treat: Tony’s a great designer (particularly with type) and though we’ve been friends since high school, we don’t collaborate often. My pen-and-ink drawing highlights Tony’s sartorial sensibility, and features a drum kit brimming with Mad Magazine-ish jokes.
Here’s the poster (click the image to see all the drum kit gags larger):
Tony and I collaborated in another way for his birthday, reuniting our 1990s band Lozenge to play three songs at the birthday party.
