To promote her new collection of short stories, And Also Sharks, author Jessica Westhead asked three artists (Aaron Leighton, Evan Munday, and myself) to create artwork for a short animated film. Each artist illustrated scenes from one her stories, which were then animated by Mike White. The film debuted at a raucous book launch at the Toronto Underground Cinema.

Author Jessica Westhead asked me to create this “YOSStini” design for Year of the Short Story (YOSS), a manifesto she has put together with fellow authors Sarah Selecky and Matthew J. Trafford. This call to action in the service of the short story aims “aims to unite fellow writers and readers everywhere in one cause—to bring short fiction the larger audience it deserves.” You can read the whole YOSS manifesto here, on this handsome website designed by Thomas Trafford.
According to Westhead, the YOSStini is one part deceptively simple syrup to two parts full-bodied booze with complex characters.
I will be working with Westhead again this Spring, contributing to a promotional animation for her upcoming short story collection, And Also Sharks.
